The People v OJ Simpson, E2: The Juice is Loose

demetria lucas February 9, 2016

OJ’s attorney and best friend Rob Kardashian is in the bathroom praying hard for OJ Simpson, who is on the run.  Not literally. He’s in the backseat of the white Bronco that AC Cowlings is driving erratically across the LA highways. Kardashian fears the worst. “He’s in pain and he knows not what he’s doing,” he prays

In another room in the Kardashian home, Shapiro is calling “Gil Garcetti"(Bruce Greenwood) at the DA’s office to explain that he’s not responsible for OJ fleeing. Garcetti ain’t trying to hear all that. He just wants OJ to turn himself in. When Shapiro gets off the phone, Kardashian comes in with the suicide note, signed, oddly, with a happy face

The People v. OJ Simpson: "Did You Do It?"

demetria lucas February 3, 2016

The People v OJ Simpson opens with footage from the Rodney King beating, and the LA Uprising. It gives viewers a sense of the racial climate in LA and across the US at the time OJ Simpson was charged with the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

Fast forward two years and a chauffer is waiting for his client in front of a stretch white limo. Cuba Gooding Jr, as Orenthal James Simpson comes out of the house carrying a ton bags. He’s late, says he overslept and had to take a shower. OJ hopes he can still make his flight. He’s headed to the airport to make it to Chicago. On the ride, the driver, a young white guy, makes nervous chat and apologizes for flipping out when OJ walked out. He’s never driven a celebrity before. As if anyone watching this didn’t know OJ was a big deal, it’s now been conveyed.

BMJ Recap Season Finale: No More Drama

demetria lucas December 15, 2015

MJ's is laid up with her white guy in her bed, who has grown tired of laying up in the house with her. He wants to take her on a proper date and will do all the planning. Yes, grown man!!

This would make most women happy, but not so much MJ. She's a public figure who blogs follow and she's worried about the perception others are going to have of her if they find out she's dating a white man.

Girl, they talked about Jesus. They will absolutely talk about you too. Just go on and live your life and be happy.

Chi-Raq Didn't Miss the Mark, It Went Off the Grid

demetria lucas December 10, 2015

*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*

I went into Chi-raq expecting to love, or at least like it. I’m a big Spike Lee fan. For years, I had posters of School Daze and Bamboozled, an entirely satiric film, hanging on my walls.  I own most of Lee’s films on DVD. Still. And while the film has received a lot of controversy, so has every other Spike Lee film. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. So that didn’t faze me either.

But, um… the only thing keeping me from saying “hated it!” and giving a Z-snap formation like Antoine Merrriweather and Blaine Edwards from In Living Color are the messages in Chi-raq. There are great discussions about the impact of violence in Chicago—the deaths and the bullet-ridden bodies of the living. There’s a lot of “that needed to be said” about the prison industrial complex and the NRA having politicians in pocket, and how something more would be done if the same violence that occurs in some Black neighborhoods happened in White neighborhoods. It needed to pointed out where all these problems stem from, especially high unemployment rates that lead to an underground economy out of necessity. Someone with a platform as big as Lee’s needed to get on a microphone and say, “this”, ie, the violence in Chicago, “is a disgrace!”
