Chi-Raq Didn't Miss the Mark, It Went Off the Grid

demetria lucas December 10, 2015

*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*

I went into Chi-raq expecting to love, or at least like it. I’m a big Spike Lee fan. For years, I had posters of School Daze and Bamboozled, an entirely satiric film, hanging on my walls.  I own most of Lee’s films on DVD. Still. And while the film has received a lot of controversy, so has every other Spike Lee film. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. So that didn’t faze me either.

But, um… the only thing keeping me from saying “hated it!” and giving a Z-snap formation like Antoine Merrriweather and Blaine Edwards from In Living Color are the messages in Chi-raq. There are great discussions about the impact of violence in Chicago—the deaths and the bullet-ridden bodies of the living. There’s a lot of “that needed to be said” about the prison industrial complex and the NRA having politicians in pocket, and how something more would be done if the same violence that occurs in some Black neighborhoods happened in White neighborhoods. It needed to pointed out where all these problems stem from, especially high unemployment rates that lead to an underground economy out of necessity. Someone with a platform as big as Lee’s needed to get on a microphone and say, “this”, ie, the violence in Chicago, “is a disgrace!”

MY EVENING WITH ZANE, TALKING SEX ADDICTION, G-SPOTS & PANTY DROPPING

demetria lucas October 11, 2014

On September 18, I met up with Zane at The London hotel in New York City to discuss her latest project, the film adaption of "Addicted". Admittedly, I was a little nervous, which is both weird and totally expected. I've interviewed ALOT of A-Listers over the years and never batted a lash, even people I had fan-crushes on (withe the exception of Michael Ealy, in which I dropped my notes during the interview because of my proximity to physical excellence). But for writers (and artists I grew up listening too), I totally fan out, getting all tongue-tied and knocking things over.

When I began my career in book publishing in 2003, Zane was the gold standard for romance authors and an author with her sales were the goal for every editor and publisher. The writers on my roster did just fine in their own right, and together, we racked up plenty of awards and 5-star reviews, but we never made it to Zane stratosphere. She was in her own orbit.

REVIEW: "GET ON UP" (AKA THE JAMES BROWN MOVIE)

demetria lucas August 2, 2014

*James Brown in this green velour sweatsuit, ranting about who took a sh-- in his bathroom is hilarious. This scene is going down in epic Black movie history. BEST LINE: "you did right by yourself, ain't no other way to live."

'THINK LIKE A MAN TOO' REVIEW

demetria lucas June 22, 2014

It was something of a given that Think Like a Man was going to get a sequel. The film, inspired by the advice in Steve Harvey’s best-selling advice book and featuring an all-star black cast, grossed more than $33 million during its opening weekend and went on to clear nearly $96 million at the box office. It was a surprise hit, though I’m not sure why it was a surprise. Plenty of black movies have earned good returns, but critics seem amazed every single time it happens, as if black people and nonblack people alike don’t turn out for a solid film, especially one with predominantly black folks in it.
