Power 0304: Reality Hits Hard

demetria lucas August 8, 2016

In general, I’m not feeling Power this season. Everyone is getting on my nerves. I don’t like this Jamie and Angie thing. Like, other than sex, which doesn’t even seem all that good anymore, what do they have? Their relationship has gone from living in a fantasy to real world problems, which is real life, but it’s just not fun anymore.  They’re staying in Angie’s teeny apartment and living on top of each other, Angie can’t cook, demands of work put the relationship on the back burner, and they’re constantly annoyed with each other. Oh, and they’re both lying by omission to each other all the time. The one thing Angie has going for her is that she believes in Jamie and his attempt to live by the law, which Tasha couldn’t fathom. I wonder how many times James has thought about the 80/20 rule. Tasha wasn’t perfect, but she had a lot that Angie lacks. Maybe Jamie should have tried harder to get Tasha on board with his living clean vision.

I also never liked Holly, and there’s a lot of her this season. She’s also more annoying than ever before, badgering Tommy to kill Ghost, his best friend from at least junior high school. There’s a lot of Tommy too, who I like, but prefer in smaller doses. I also don’t like Tasha  having Lala involved in some nefarious ish that Tasha hasn’t told her about. I get the logic that it’s best that Lala has plausible deniability if something goes awry with the business. But, it’s still grimy.

What I do like? I actually love Annika Noni Rose and I enjoy watching her take on an unexpected role and kill it, but without knowing her end game or motivation, I don’t get her either… yet. The scenes with her and Fiddy seem like a whole separate show. I also never liked Fiddy on the show.

Underground Finale: Get Free or Die Trying

demetria lucas May 12, 2016

At the plantation, Tom is trying to pacify Ernestine with some BS about how he wanted to be better than his father. At least he can hold his liquor better. Yes, Tom, because Sam is dead, you're talking to his mother and it’s all about you. And oh, Tom Macon ain’t even his real name. He says he feels bad about Sam. He can’t eat or sleep. He begs Ernestine to forgive him.  Um. You just killed this lady’s first born. She ain’t hear for your sorrow, Tom.

Ernestine says that Sam’s lynching is all her fault, karma for what she did to Pearlie Mae. She tells Massa Tom that she killed Pearlie Mae and she prays for her own salvation. Lady, I don’t even hold that against you. You did what you had to, to protect your daughter.

Tom doesn’t even react about Pearlie Mae. He shoves his hand up Ernestine’s skirt— yes, the ladywhose son he just killed— and says that he wants her to go to DC with him, and they can be “free”. Define free, Tom. You gonna give Ernestine her manumission papers? And what about her kid, James, your kid, the one that you didn’t kill… yet? Is he gonna be free? You gonna take that bounty of Rosalee, or nah? And what about your wife and three kids? Will you be free of them? Tom makes me mad. He ain’t sh—.

Underground E9: In the Devil's Snare

demetria lucas May 5, 2016

Cato and Noah are in the woods watching the slaughterhouse where Rosalee is being held. They're trying to figure out the best way to attack when Cato confesses he has-- present tense-- a daughter and wife. "They both had a smile that would stop your heart." They were sold from Louisiana. He ran the night they were taken and follows the slave wagon for days before he got caught and dragged back to the plantation. He said he doesn't plan on seeing them again. "A heart is made for pumping blood. That's the only thing it needs to survive," Cato says.

Oh, God. He needs a hug-- and a therapist-- bad. Please, Lawd. Let him find his family before this series ends. It's a long shot. But it's also TV.

But enough talk. It's time for action. Noah sneaks off towards the slaughterhouse, and Cato goes riding by the lookouts making it rain aka distracting them. A couple of them chase after Cato. One of the guys runs inside to tell Jeremiah it's money everywhere. He runs out. Stabler ain't moved or moving. He knows what's up.

The guards followed Cato's money trail to an abandoned coach in the woods. They open the door to the coach and Cato's sitting in there with a double barrel shot gun.. They dead. Rest in Hell, Muthaf---ers!!!!

Underground Episode 8: Who We Say We Are

demetria lucas April 28, 2016

Tom is giving a speech on his balcony in support of slavery , blah, blah values, blah, blah prosperity, blah, blah, heritage. "Are we who we say we are?" Tom asks. That is the question.

The camera zooms out and… Sweet. Jesus! As art, my God this is poignant imagery. Fireworks are going off like this is the greatest thing ever. But Dear God. DEAR GOD!!!

This is who you are Tom: a spineless mofo who has two enslaved children by the woman you’ve repeatedly raped. And you just killed her oldest child. And you knew you were going to do that when she gave you the uplifting pep talk. And instead of risking her seeing what you’d done, you had your goons capture her while she was looking for her son and you lock her in a box. You might not like it. It might make you queasy. But you do it anyway because there’s nothing you won’t do to get this ego-stroking job. you cheat on your wife with a woman from a race of people you consider subhuman, and you let the woman play dom to you. You parade your outside children in front of your wife with no regard to her feelings. Tom, you suck at humanity.
